Common causes of household drain blockages.
Grease and oil: Grease and oil can accumulate in drains over time and solidify, causing blockages. This is particularly common in kitchen drains where cooking oil and fatty liquids are often poured down the sink.
Hair: Hair is a common cause of blockages in bathroom drains, particularly in showers and bathtub drains. Over time, hair can accumulate and create a solid blockage.
Food waste: Food waste, particularly large food particles, can cause blockages in kitchen sink drains. This can be prevented by using a sink strainer to catch any large food particles. Also ensuring filters are used and regularly cleaned from within your dishwasher drain.
Foreign objects: Objects such as sanitary products, wet wipes, and other non-biodegradable materials can cause blockages in drains. These objects do not break down easily and can accumulate over time, causing a blockage. Toilet paper is designed to breakup in water which is why we advise our clients to only use loo paper and not wet wipes.
Tree roots: Tree roots can invade and grow inside pipes, causing blockages and damage to the pipes. This is more common in older properties where the pipes may be more vulnerable.
