Most people don’t worry about their drains or sewer pipes. These drainage systems are designed to effectively protect your health and the local environment. Their main purpose is to take waste and water away from your home, however if a pipe becomes cracked from tree roots or blocked due to poor installation or inappropriate use your pipes can backup and overflow. Damaged or blocked drains, sewage pipes or stormwater drainage can quickly become hazardous in wet weather, in particular when high volumes of rain fall like that experienced in South East Queensland during the recent storms.

Tips for Preparing for the Summer Storms:

Tip #1 – Dispose of waste properly

Fats and Oils tipped down a sink are a BIG NO NO… As are other objects that are flushed or washed down a drain. Anything other than waste water being flushed away can cause major problems. You can avoid these problems by using drain sieves, locating a rubbish bin conveniently near the toilet, bathroom and kitchen sinks for disposal of all debris. It’s also a good idea to keep bathroom and toilet doors closed where possible to deter small children and their small toys.

Tip #2 – Gutters

Preventing leaves, twigs and other debris from being washed down the drain during the summer storms can be as simple as regularly cleaning your gutters and downpipes. This will help prevent blocked drains and gutters which can cause water overflow in heavy rain.

Tip #3 – Keep gardens away from drains and sewer pipes

It’s a good idea to keep plants and gardens away from drains and sewers wherever possible and plant new trees at least 3m away. Tree roots can cause major damage to pipework so it is a really good idea to do your research before doing the gardening. You can consult your local nursery for advice about suitable trees and bushes to plant.

Tip #4 – Take care with backyard landscaping and construction

When completing any work in your backyard that involves digging or heavy machinery it is important that you take care not to dig up a drain or squash existing pipework with the weight of heavy vehicle or machinery. You can use the Dial Before You Dig free enquiry service to locate any underground sewer pipes or drains that may be easily damaged. A ruptured sewerage pipe could cost you in fines and repairs, and result in serious health issues to your family.
